The Supernova Rate in Starburst Galaxies
نویسندگان
چکیده
We conducted an optical CCD search for supernovae in a sample of 142 bright (m(B) 16 mag), nearby (z 0:03) starburst galaxies over the period 1988 December to 1991 June, to a limiting R-band magnitude of 18. Five supernovae were found, in all cases outside the host galaxy's nucleus. We determine supernova rates in the extranuclear regions to be 0:7h 2 SNU for type Ia, 0:7h 2 SNU for type Ib/c, and 0:6h 2 SNU for type II, with large uncertainties but upper limits of 2:2h 2 , 2:5h 2 , and 1:7h 2 SNU, respectively. These rates are similar to those measured in \normal" galaxies. We found no evidence for a supernova-induced brightening in any galactic nucleus, and, with a few reasonable assumptions, can place upper limits of 9h 2 , 12h 2 , and 7h 2 SNU on the rates of unobscured supernovae type Ia, Ib/c, and II, respectively, inside the nuclei.

The starburst-GRB connection
As starburst galaxies show a star formation rate up to several hundred times larger than the one in a typical galaxy, the expected supernova rate is higher than average. This in turn implies a high rate of long gamma ray bursts (GRBs), which are extreme supernova events. We present a catalog of 127 local starburst galaxies with redshifts of z < 0.03. Using this catalog we investigate the possib...
متن کاملEstimating Starburst Supernova Rates Using OSSE Observations of M82 and NGC 253
We have used the OSSE observations of the starburst galaxies NGC 253 and M82 to obtain upper limits to the Type Ia and Ib supernova rates in these galaxies. Monte Carlo simulations of randomly occurring supernova events in NGC 253 and M82 were performed to evaluate the significance of our upper limit to the 0.847 and1.238 MeV Co gamma-ray line fluxes on the supernova rate from these two galaxie...
متن کاملDirect measurement of the supernova rate in starburst galaxies
Supernovae play a key role in the dynamics, structure, and chemical evolution of galaxies. The massive stars that end their lives as supernovae live for short enough times that many are still associated with dusty star formation regions when they explode, making them difficult to observe at visible wavelengths. In active star forming regions (galactic nuclei and starburst regions), dust extinti...
متن کاملThe Nature of the Compact Supernova Remnants in Starburst Galaxies
Radio observations of starburst regions in galaxies have revealed groups of compact nonthermal sources that may be radiative supernova remnants expanding in the interclump medium of molecular clouds. Because of the high pressure in starburst regions, the interclump medium may have a density ∼ 10 H atoms cm in a starburst nucleus like M82 and & 10 H atoms cm in an ultraluminous galaxy like Arp 2...
متن کاملAGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies
We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...
متن کاملSeyfert 1 mutation of the classical Seyfert 2 nucleus NGC 7582 1
We report the transition towards a type 1 Seyfert experienced by the classical type 2 Seyfert nucleus in NGC 7582. The transition, found at most 20 days from its maximum peak, presents a unique opportunity to study these rare events in detail. At maximum the Hα line width is of about 12000 km s−1. We examine three scenarios that could potentially explain the transition: capture of a star by a s...
